WE ALSO CONTINUE TO LOOK AT THEM AND THEN AT THE NEXT MEETING WE APPROVE THEM. YOU WILL SEE TONIGHT THAT WE ARE GOING TO BE VOTING ON A POLICY COMMITTEE, WHICH WILL HELP. IT WON'T CHANGE THE DEPTH IN WHICH WE REVIEW THESE POLICIES AND THERE WILL BE TIME FOR CITIZENS TO MAKE COMMENTS.

A FEW MONTHS AGO WE RECEIVED QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW OUR SCHOOL DIVISION WAS GOING TO HANDLE SOME OF THE POTENTIAL CHANGES TO MATH PATHWAYS THAT WERE PROPOSED BY THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. WE HAD THAT DISCUSSION PUBLICLY AND AT THAT TIME, WE ASSURED OUR PUBLIC THAT ALTHOUGH THERE MAY BE CHALLENGES FROM WASHINGTON, D.C. AND FROM RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, WE WERE GOING TO DO WHAT'S BEST FROM GOOCHLAND COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND THE COMMUNITY WE REPRESENT AND THAT'S NOT GOING TO CHANGE.

AS A SCHOOL DIVISION, OUR GOAL IS TO MAXIMIZE EACH AND EVERY LEARNER WHO WALKS IN OUR DOOR.

THAT'S BEEN A MISSION ADOPTED BY NUMEROUS SCHOOL BOARDS AND A MISSION THAT'S DRIVEN THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR MANY, MANY YEARS, ALLOWING US TO BE RECOGNIZED BY ONE OF THE BEST SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN THIS COMMONWEALTH. AS WE GO FORWARD, DECISIONS THAT WILL IMPACT OUR DIVISION FOR YEARS TO COME WILL BE DRIVEN BY OUR MISSION.

SOME ARE MANDATED BY STATE LAW, OTHERS ACCOMPLISHED BY THE BOARD TO GAIN PERSPECTIVE AND UNDERSTAND ISSUES THAT AFFECT OUR SCHOOL DIVISION. THESE ARE MADE OF VOLUNTEERS, STAFF AS WELL AS SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS. STAFF AND SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS DO NOT HAVE VOTING AUTHORITY ON THESE COMMITTEES, HOWEVER, ULTIMATELY THESE COMMITTEES ARE ADVISORY IN NATURE AND ANY SORT OF DECISIONS MADE ON BEHALF OF THE SCHOOL DECISION ARE MADE BY THE FIVE BOARD MEMBERS HERE THIS EVEN LING. ON AN ANNUALING.

ON AN ANNUAL BASIS, THE SCHOOL BOARD RECEIVES REPORTS REGARDING THE WORK OF ADVISORY COMMITTEES.

THE FIRST REPORT COMES AND CHAIRMAN MICHAEL ALLEN IS HERE THIS EVENING.

I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE WITH THE BOARD WHAT THE COMMITTEE HAS BEEN UP TO FOR THE PAST YEAR. 2020-2021 WAS A VERY INTERESTING SCHOOL YEAR, ONE I HOPE WE NEVER SEE AGAIN. I'M VERY EXCITED TO HEAR ALL OUR STUDENTS WILL BE BACK IN SCHOOL AND HAPPY TO SEE THAT HAPPEN. I THINK IT'S A GREAT, GREAT THING THAT THE SCHOOL SYSTEM IS DOING. I ALSO WANT TO APPLAUD YOU FOR THE WORK AND THE DECISIONS YOU MADE OVER THE PAST SCHOOL YEAR TO TRY TO ANSWER ALL THE CONCERNS OF THE COMMUNITY WHILE KEEPING OUR STUDENTS SAFE. I THINK YOU DID AN EXCELLENT JOB AND YOU SHOULD BE APPLAUDED FOR THAT. I KNOW SOME OF YOU WERE BEAT UP FOR IT, BUT YOU SHOULD BE APPLAUDED. THE ACEE COMMITTEE WAS REBRANDED LAST YEAR. THIS COMMITTEE HAS BEEN IN EXISTENCE FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS.

WE WERE ORIGINALLY KNOWN AS THE MINORITY STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT ADVISORY COUNCIL.

WE UNDERWENT SOME NEW LEADERSHIP AND CHANGED THE NAME TO ACEE, THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR EQUITY IN EDUCATION. THE PURPOSE OF THE COMMITTEE HAS REMAINED MUCH THE SAME.

WE ARE HERE TO WORK WITH THE COMMUNITY, TO BE A CONDUIT TO THE COMMUNITY, TO BRING THOSE VOICES TO THE SCHOOL BOARD TO LEAD TO A MORE EQUITABLE, A MORE INCLUSIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL STUDENTS IN GOOCHLAND COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS. TO DO THAT, WE CREATED FORUMS WHERE PARENTS, TEACHERS, CONCERNED CITIZENS THAT ARE INTERESTED IN THE SUCCESS OF MINORITY STUDENTS IN GOOCHLAND COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEMS HAVE A WAY TO SHARE IDEA AND CONCERNS NOT ONLY WITH THE TEACHERS BUT ALSO WITH SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION AND THE SCHOOL BOARD ITSELF. WE ENCOURAGE THOSE IDEAS BE BROUGHT FORWARD AND WE WANT TO SHARE THEM WITH YOU. AS DR. RALEY STATED, THIS IS SIMPLY AN ADVISORY COMMITTEE AND WE'RE BRINGING THE VOICE OF THE COMMUNITY AND WE ARE LOOKING FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD TO ENACT POLICIES THAT WILL WORK WITH THOSE CITIZENS. TO THAT END, AFTER MEETING WITH

SOME PARENTS THIS YEAR, I CREATED A VISION AND THAT WAS TO SUPPORT THE SCHOOLS IN AN EFFORT TO CREATE A SAFE AND INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR STUDENTS TEACHING AN HONEST VERSION OF U.S. HISTORY. I HEART A LOT OF TALK ABOUT CRITICAL RACE THEORY.

THIS IS NOT SAYING ANYBODY ON THIS COMMITTEE OR ANYBODY IN ANY OF THESE MEETINGS IS ASKING US TO TEACH CRITICAL RACE THEORY. THIS MEETING WOULD YOU DESCRIBE HELD IN JUNE OF LAST YEAR AND CRITICAL RACE THEORY WASN'T EVEN A THING, OKAY? SO LET'S MOVE ON.

SO LAST YEAR, 2020 WAS A VERY DIFFICULT YEAR SO WE HAD A HARD TIME CREATING A FORUM.

IT JUST SO HAPPENS THAT AS THE NEW CHAIRMAN OF THIS COMMITTEE, I WAS CONTACTED BY A NUMBER OF COMMUNITY CITIZENS, CONCERNED SEASONS AND A NUMBER OF PARENTS AND THEY ALL WANTED TO HAVE A VOICE AT ONE OF THE MEETINGS. THERE WERE SO MANY PEOPLE WHO WANTED A PLACE TO SPEAK, I SAID IT'S NOT GOING TO WORK TO HAVE EVERYONE SPEAK AT THE MEETING SO I ARRANGED A MEETING AT A PARK.

WE WERE ABLE TO SOCIAL DISTANCE, WHICH WAS THE CONCERN AT THE TIME, AND WE HAD AN HONEST CONVERSATION. THINGS THAT CAME OUT OF THAT MEETING ARE IN THE SLIDE, CREATE A POLICY OF NO RACIAL, POLITICAL OR DEVICIVE CLOTHING ON SCHOOL GROUNDS, HONOR AND GIFTED PROGRAMS, SEEK OUT MINORITY SPEAKERS TO OFFER A DES VEERS PERSPECTIVE FOR STUDENT PROGRAMS. I HAVE ACEE MEMBERS AND OTHER PARTNERS PARTICIPATE IN RECRUITING SESSIONS FOR TEACHERS AND WE WERE ASKINGS FOR A MENTORING AND ADVOCACY PROGRAM INCLUDING BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS T IDEA THERE THAT LOCAL BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS WOULD WORK WITH SOME OF OUR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO GIVE THEM IDEAS OF CAREER PATHS AND ALSO REVIEW HISTORY THROUGH BIASES. I WILL GIVE YOU AN XAFRNL OF THIS. HOW MANYEXAMPLE OF THIS.

HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE HEARD OF LANGSTON HUGHES? HIS UNCLE WAS THE FIRST ELECTED AFRICAN AMERICAN SENATOR IN VIRGINIA. HIS NAME WAS JOHN MERCER LANGSTON, BORN IN LOUISA COUNTY. THAT'S A POSITIVE EXAMPLE OF HISTORY, LOCAL HISTORY THAT'S NOT TAUGHT IN OUR SCHOOLS. THESE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE INCLUDED IN OUR PROGRAM. ALL RIGHT. SO WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE WERE CREATING A CURRICULUM AND AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE EVERY STUDENT COULD BE SUCCESSFUL.

THESE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS WE ASKED THE SCHOOL BOARD TO LOOK AT.

NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE. THIS YEAR SAW THAT THE SCHOOL BOARD HAS CREATED A NEW POSITION FOR DR. BETH FOULER AND SHE'S THE ADVANCED PROGRAM AND EQUITY SPECIALIST.

AFTER PRESENTING THESE REMARKS FROM THE COMMUNITY MEETING THERE WERE EQUITY GOALS PUT IN PLACE BY THE SCHOOL SYSTEM AND ONE OF THE THING WAS CREATE A WELCOMING AND INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT THAT FOSTER A SENSE OF BELONGING FOR ALL STUDENTS, ENGAGE IN ONGOING EDUCATION OF OUR WORK FORCE, AND THOSE THINGS ARE BEING WORKED ON. WE RECEIVE MONTHLY REPORTS FROM DR. FOULER EXPLAINING WHAT THE SCHOOL SYSTEM IS DOING TOWARDS THOSE EFFORTS.

I WANT TO SAY THAT WE WERE VERY ENCOURAGED BY SOME OF THE THINGS SHE WAS ABLE TO SHARE WITH US.

THE SCHOOL SYSTEM ITSELF, GOOCHLAND HIGH SCHOOL, FOR EXAMPLE, THROUGH THE PRINCIPAL HAS CREATED A BASE COMMITTEE AND IT'S LIKE THE JUNIOR VERSION ACEE COMMITTEE AND OUR STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO STITHE WITH SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS AND HAVE A VOICE. WE'RE VERY ENCOURAGED BY THAT.

THERE'S ALSO BEEN AN EFFORT TO CREATE GREATER TRANSPARENCY AROUND GIFTED AND ADVANCED

PROGRAMS FOR ACA STUDENTS. I ALSO HAVE SEEN AND HAD A CHANCE TO PARTICIPATE IN A COUPLE OF RECRUITMENT SESSIONS WHERE WE WERE LOOKING FOR DIVERSE TEACHING STAFF AND WAS VERY ENCOURAGED BY SOME OF THE PEOPLE I HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO MEET AND SOME OF THE PEOPLE THAT DR. RALEY SHARED WITH ME ARE GOING TO BE HIRED. WE'RE ALSO TRYING TO RECREATE SOME MINORITY ROLE MODELS TO WORK WITH OUR STUDENTS AND HELP THEM FIND A CAREER PATH, WHETHER IT BE THROUGH TRADE OR COLLEGE OR OTHER MEANS. AND ALSO OUR HISTORY CURRICULUM.

I KNOW THERE'S A LOT OF WORK BEING DONE BY THE STATE BUT WE ALSO ASK THAT THERE ARE POSITIVE EXAMPLES OUT THERE AND THAT WE UTILIZE THAT INFORMATION TO SUPPLEMENT WHAT'S BEING CAUGHT IN THE CLASSROOM. WE WERE ALSO CONCERNED ABOUT STUDENT CONDUCT AND THAT'S BEING ADDRESSED ISSUE BY THE SCHOOL SYSTEM. FINALLY, THIS COMMITTEE BEGAN WITH MR. CRAWLS AS THE CHAIRMAN. HE WAS THE CHAIRMAN OF MSAC. I WILL TELL YOU THAT HE IS GREATLY MISSED BY ME AND THE MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE. I HEARD A FEW PEOPLE TODAY MENTION HIS ANYMORE AND TO THAT END, WE WANT TO APPLAUD THE EFFORTS OF HIM AND THE WORK HE PUT IN PLACE TO MAKE MSAC A SUCCESSFUL OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS AND WE ALSO WANT TO THANK HIM FOR HIS HARD WORK ON THIS SCHOOL BOARD AND FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO DON'T KNOW, HE WAS ALSO A MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS FOR A FEW YEARS AND WANT TO THANK HIM FOR HIS HARD WORK THERE. TO THAT END, THE COMMITTEE HAS WORKED WITH THE CENTRAL OFFICE PERSONNEL IN HELPING CREATE THE QUARRELS FELLOWSHIP THAT WILL GO TO MINORITY STUDENTS WANTING TO BECOME A TEACHER IN GOOCHLAND COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS. THERE ARE THINGS FROM OUR EXPERIENCES OVER THE COURSE OF THE PAST 16-MONTH THAT IS WE MAY WANT TO CONTINUE AND WE HAD GREAT PAR THEYS PASCHEN AMONG STUDENTS AND FAMILIES ABLE TOTI STUDENTS AND FAMILIES ABLE TO PARTICIPATE REMOTELY ON A SATURDAY GETTING THEIR FAMILY OUT OF BED AND BEING THERE FOR A COO NONE DRUM DAY SO WE FOUND THAT THE DELIVERY MODEL FOR CONUNDRUM DAY WAS HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL. THEN WE HAD STEM CAMP EARLIER IN JUNE AND THAT WAS VERY, VERY WELL ATTENDED. WE STUDENTS BUILDING AND CREATING AND DOING SOME REALLY AMAZING THINGS. WE DID ENRICHMENT FIELD TRIPS ASSOCIATED WITH THAT, BUILDING SOLAR CARS AND SOLAR OVENS AND ROLLER COASTERS IT WAS REALLY COOL TO SEE THE ENGAGEMENT AND THE THOUGHT GOING INTO THEIR WORK AND THE PRIDE IN THEIR WORK AND THE LEARNING HAPPENING IN THAT SET SOING WE WANT TO THANK THE VOLUNTEERS WHO PROVIDE THEIR EXPERTISE.

WE COVERED THINGS LIKE PEER PRESSURE, ANXIETY, PER FICTIONISM, A LOT OF THINGS WE SEE IN OUR GIFTED AND HIGH ACHIEVING STUDENTS AND IT WAS OPEN TO ANY PARENT WHO WANTED TO ATTEND THAT NIGHT AND THAT WAS RECORDED IF ANYBODY WANTS TO GO BACK AND SEE THAT. SHARE? >> THE MAIN HIGHLIGHT IS THAT EVEN WITHOUT THE BOND REFERENDUM, WE HAVE CASH ON HAND TO START THESE PROJECTS. THE $339,000 CONTRACT THAT WE ARE RECOMMEND THAT HAD YOU APPROVE FROM TIMMONS, THE FIRST, WE WILL WRITE A PURCHASE ORDER FIRST FOR $300,000 OF IT TO GET US THROUGH 100% DESIGN AND THE BALANCE OF THE PROJECT IS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION PROCUREMENT OF THE FIRM AND THE CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION.

SO WE COULD STOP AT THE POINT OF DESIGN IF THE REFERENDUM DOES NOT GO THROUGH.
